Ted Goddard, Guitarist & Music Educator

Ted Goddard began playing guitar at age eight inspired by his father, a professional saxophonist who worked with big-band leaders Red Norvo, Claude Thornhill, Hal McIntyre, Boyd Raeburn, and Benny Goodman. Goddard's desire to understand jazz harmony and improvisation first led to private studies with noted guitarist Barry Galbraith, followed by tutoring and jam sessions with other favorites: Joe Pass, Tal Farlow, Herb Ellis, Barney Kessel, Howard Roberts, Tommy Tedesco and Joe Diorio among them. Former college music professors include Grant Wolf and Don Bothwell at Mesa Community College; Dan Haerle, Dr. Tom Ferguson and Dr. Wallace Rave at Arizona State University; and Bill Dobbins at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester.

A professional musician since 1974, Goddard performs as a solo guitarist, leads his own jazz ensembles, backs top-name entertainers and jazz musicians, and plays touring Broadway shows. He has also served as an auxiliary musician to The Phoenix Symphony, and recorded commercial studio sessions for radio, television, and video soundtracks. As a roster artist with the Arizona Commission on the Arts from 1985 to 2005, Goddard conducted school residencies, performances, and outreach services throughout Arizona.

After working as a freelance musician for two decades (see performance listing below), Goddard returned to Arizona State University to complete a Master of Arts degree in music theory under Dr. Amy Holbrook and Dr. Ellon Carpenter. While at ASU, he served as a graduate teaching assistant in the music theory and ear training program and was appointed the school's first director of jazz guitar studies by former department head Chuck Marohnic. Goddard continues to pursue a performance career and also instructs private students in guitar technique, improvisation, theory, and comprehensive musicianship.

In 2000, he teamed with jazz arranger and pianist Prince Shell to archive and perform Shell's library for ten-piece band; their first CD, Speculation by "Prince Shell and the Ted Goddard 10tet," is the result of this partnership. Dedicated to the art of jazz, the 10tet maintains its affiliation with the American Federation of Musicians, Local 586, headquartered in Phoenix, AZ. Goddard also compiled music tracks from various recording sessions (1982-2003) to produce The Sonoran Sessions, a compilation CD featuring over 30 local and national jazz artists: Prince Shell, Tim Ray, Bob Ravenscroft, Charles Lewis, Ted Goddard Sr., Frank Smith, Steve Marsh, Gary Carney, Joe Corral, Fred Forney, Tom Miles, Dennis Monce, Tom Golden, Bob Lashier, Paul Johnson, David Wilson, Tim Downs, and many others. Please contact Goddard directly for CD purchases.

Certified by the Maricopa County Community College District in 1990, Goddard is a faculty member at Chandler-Gilbert Community College teaching music theory/aural perception, music business, jazz history, jazz theory, combo performance, and jazz improvisation. Prior teaching experience includes: Arizona State University; adjunct-faculty positions at Scottsdale Community College, Phoenix College, and Mesa Community College; Northern Arizona University's "Summer Music Camp" and "Summer Jazz Workshop"; Grant Wolf's "MCC Summer Jazz Workshop"; and guitar instruction at the Bob Ravenscroft Music Studio in Scottsdale, AZ.
